I am Love – film

The story is gripping and Tilda Swinton is superb in the central role. I do recommend this film. However there are some obvious flaws.
For film music to work it should be like the perfect frame for a picture – the picture looks great and you don’t notice the frame. I certainly noticed the music in this film and thought it rather good. It didn’t always fit the action. This could be because John Adams, instead of writing specifically for the film, was re-cycling old stuff. Lollapalooza was written in 1995 and is used in this film.
The love scene in the bush might be a homage to David Lean. It certainly reminded me of the same scene in Ryan’s Daughter(1970.)
As Billy Wilder said to Cameron Crowe when he was discussing “ Jerry Maguire” with him “ Why should we care about Jerry Maguire?”
I’d like to ask Luda Guadagino, “ Why should we care about Emma?” She’s rather a cold fish and apart from a dislike of parties seems to fit in rather well with her boring family. Are we meant to sympathise with her? My thought was that she didn’t have enough to do. At the end my sympathies lay entirely with Eduardo’s fiancée – totally abandoned by Emma and the family.
I hope that Emma enjoys a life of washing up once she gets out of that damp cave.
